Meet AFSPECWAR’s monster garage: B.A.T.M.A.N.

Air Force Special Warfare utilizes a crucial wing of the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) to create advanced technology programs. Code-named BATMAN (short for Battlefield Air Targeting Man-Aided (K)nowledge), this group of engineers keeps PJs, TACP, SERE and more kitted with groundbreaking, cool-guy gear.

Among their fielded equipment ‘wins’ include:

  • FISH (Flashing Indicator of Swimmers Health)- An underwater pulsox that visibly tracks your blood o2 saturation. Used when training for prolonged periods underwater/freediving.
  • SPURS (Space Proximity Under-Canopy Response System)- A warning indicator for jumpers when the ground is near. Works great for night ops.
  • BATDOK (Battlefield Airman Trauma Distributed Observation Kit)- An advanced patient monitoring system that can read wireless sensors, manage mass casualty scenarios, produce digital treatment cards and pass patient info to other medics.
